2022 - 2023 North East Skimo Events Calendar
Below is a list of skimo-related events.
Six of these events are highlighted as part of an ❄️ Ice Coast Skimo Race Series 🏁. Ice Coast Skimo will keep track of racer points for these six events. The final championship race, hosted at Sunday River (March 12), will crown the men’s and women’s Ice Coast Skimo champions!
Important note: Ice Coast Skimo is not the official host of any skimo events and assumes no liability for any skimo activities or events. Skimo and ski mountaineering are inherently dangerous, and participants assume all risk.
Mt Abram, ME: 24 Hour Challenge
This annual fundraiser event challenges skiers to see how much vertical they can climb on skis in 24 hours! Will you be able to climb the equivalent of Mt Washington? Or Mt Whitney? Or the Great One Denali? What about Everest in a day!?! (Our current course record is 44,000 ft, come set the new one!)
Register today and find out what you've got in your legs on March 26th. This event benefits the non-profit TruStrength Tomorrow to provide low income youth with scholarships for mentorship through fitness programs such as uphill skiing clinics.
Chris Bustard Memorial Snow Race
In Dec 2022, the Skimo community tragically lost one of its members, Chris Bustard, when he was hit and killed while out for a run. This race is a chance to celebrate Chris with a first-timer-friendly event. Snowshoers, backcountry skiers, and skimo racers are all welcome! Full details here.
Sunday River, ME (❄️ Ice Coast Race Series 🏁)
CHAMPIONSHIP!!
With arguably the most expansive terrain of any ski resort on the Ice Coast, be prepared for epic racing. Long bump run descents, challenging bootpacks, and everything in between! This final race of the series is the Ice Coast Skimo Championship. Top female and male finishers will get their names written on the Ice Coast Skimo trophy which is passed on to each year’s winner. Let’s go!
Greylock, MA (❄️ Ice Coast Race Series 🏁)
Continuing the long history of backcountry ski racing on DCR Mt Greylock, this is a truly iconic race course. It features the legendary Thunderbolt race trail, first cut in 1934, two-thousand foot ungroomed descents, and over 6,000’ vert of ascent. It is a brutal and spectacular - and Ice Coast Skimo’s favorite venue. Pray for snow!!!
Bromley, VT (❄️ Ice Coast Race Series 🏁)
This classic NE Rando race venue is a fan favorite for its warmer, southern aspect, long skintracks, great bump runs, and 4500’ of total vert. If the sun is shining, you’ll be hard pressed to find a more pleasant race experience in New England (while still suffering a little, of course). Don’t miss it!
Black Mountain, ME: Last Skier Standing
2023 Last Skier Standing event heads to Black Mountain of Maine. Ski The Whites partners with Black Mountain of Maine to host the fourth edition of this endurance ski event where there is only one finisher.
What: Last Skier Standing, presented by Norrøna
Where: Black Mountain of Maine
When: February 10th, 11th, 12th, & 13th

Mt. Abram, ME (❄️ Ice Coast Race Series 🏁)
Jesse Wall and the Mt Abram ski resort have been building a budding, local uphill scene in Western Maine these last few years. This little mountain packs a punch with great woods skinning, boot packing, and fun descents. Bring the skinny skis or the heavy metal and lay it out there - then hang out for food and beer at the cozy base lodge.
Mt Abram, ME
The first of three races in the TruStrength Uphill Cup will include: skimo, heavy metal, and 2-hour vertical challenge categories in the morning. Morning racers also get a free entry in the afternoon family-team lap category.

Berkshire East, MA (❄️ Ice Coast Race Series 🏁)
Where the NE Rando Race Series first started, all the way back in the 2008-09 season! Full competitive course is three laps for ~4,500’ cumulative vert, featuring steep boot packs and fun descents (and, typically, some great swag). Whether a competitive racer or heavy metal hero - Berkshire East is the right way to kick off the Ice Coast Skimo race series.
Berkshire East: Sprint
Start time is 9:30 Series default (preceded by 8:30 target time for course inspection & practice, based upon 6:30 course preparation), lower Competition slope (immediately above base lodge).
Details for elimination format and heat/wave sizes will depend upon total field.
Finals followed immediately by prize/swag distribution @ upper parking lot (near ski patrol), probably no later than noon.
1st Part: On Skis [Skinning], 2nd Part: On Foot [Hiking], 3rd Part: On Skis [Skinning], 4th Part: Descent [Skiing], 5th Part: Finish [Skating]
Stratton, VT: Vertical & Team Relay Sprint
Mass start for uphill-only Vertical race is 9:30 Series default (no advance announcement, so prepare yourself at start location ahead of time), at gondola tower with uphill access sign, just above base area gondola loading terminal. Finish at summit bear sculpture. Relay race start time is 11:30, slightly above Vertical start, at gondola tower #TBD.
Racers who have not specified two-person teams upon registration (either mixed-gender as per Olympic format or all-male given field gender imbalance) will be paired on race morning.
Mass start for first racer of each two-person team, skinning then skiing ~500' vertical, tagging second racer who repeats same course as first racer, then tagging first racer who repeats same course, finally tagging second racer who repeats same course. (Note that ski>skin transition is not part of timed competition.)
Relay race conclusion followed immediately by prize/swag distribution in parking lot (either garage lower deck or Lot 1, TBD on race morning), probably no later than 1:00.
